"THE FLU SEASON"

by Will Eno
WINNER OF THE 2004 OPPENHEIMER AWARD
FOR BEST NEW YORK DEBUT BY AN AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHT

The Flu Season is a different kind of flu. "The Flu Season" is a tour de force not only of emotion but of language. It’s frightening, it’s intoxicating. And it’s very funny. The Ionesco-like Absurdist reminds us that we all talk past each other and never-ever listen. Since we are all, to some degree, the playwrights of our own lives, questions take on deep shadows from the actions onstage as well as actions in our lives. Self-consciously intelligent, dancing ever on the edge of absurdity, "The Flu Season" takes place at a "Psychiatric Retreat Center," at which the dog-eared man meets woman scenario receives a painful injection of reality, faced with [a love story gone M.I.A.]. As riveting as the characters are, the real star of this play is the caged panther of a script. Ambivalent and rife with wordplay, "The Flu Season" is at once manic and strangely contained.

"John Logan sends American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko into battle with his demons in this electrifying play of ideas, and the artist's howls are pure music…Rothko is one old lion that will keep roaring until he draws his last breath."
